El arca-relicario del cuerpo de san Eugenio en la catedral de Toledo

Abstract

El tesoro catedralicio conserva hasta cinco relicarios vinculados con san Eugenio, primer obispo de la sede según la tradición. He tenido oportunidad de referirme a todos ellos en trabajos anteriores, pero abordo aquí por primera vez un análisis en profundidad del arca de plata que contiene su cuerpo, realizada en 1569 por Francisco Merino y Nicolás de Vergara. Una obra excepcional por su calidad artística, expresada por un lado a través de los elementos escultóricos que contiene, en los que se revela un conocimiento puntual de los modelos italianos del pleno Renacimiento, pero también por la singularidad y variedad del repertorio ornamental manierista que está repartido por toda su superficie. La obra presenta además el aliciente de incluir una escena contemporánea, en la que se muestra el cortejo procesional presidido por el rey Felipe II que condujo solemnemente los restos del santo desde su entrada en la ciudad hasta la catedral.

The cathedral treasury conserves up to five reliquaries linked to saint Eugene, the first bishop of the see according to tradition. I have had the opportunity to refer to all of them in previous works, but here I am undertaking for the first time an in-depth analysis of the silver chest containing his body, made in analysis of the silver casket containing his body, made in 1569 by Francisco Merino and Nicolás de Vergara. It is an exceptional work due of its artistic quality, expressed on the one hand through the sculptural elements it contains, which reveal a precise knowledge of Italian models of the Renaissance period, but also for the singularity and variety of the Mannerist ornamental repertoire that is spread over its entire surface. The work also has the added attraction of including a contemporary scene, showing the procession presided over by King Felipe II, which solemnly carrying the remains of the saint from his entrance into the city to the cathedral.
