Fronteras coloniales y relaciones interétnicas en el Golfo de Paria, siglos XVI-XVIII

Abstract

A diferencia del resto de los territorios de América, la conquista de los pueblos indígenas del Oriente de Venezuela fue sumamente tardía. Esto fue especialmente patente en la frontera de Paria, donde se presentó el contraste de haber sido la primera región en tener contacto con los europeos en 1498 y donde la colonización no fue posible hasta finales del siglo XVIII. Tal peculiaridad se debió principalmente a las estrategias de resistencia de sus habitantes, de una manera coherente con sus formas de organización sociopolítica. Tales organizaciones estuvieron integradas en sistemas interétnicos de una gran complejidad étnica y cultural que, además, trascendieron el alcance perceptivo de los europeos. En este trabajo se presenta una reconstrucción diacrónica de las transformaciones de las fronteras coloniales en la región de Paria. El énfasis se ubica sobre las relaciones políticas alrededor del control del territorio. El rango temporal abarca desde el siglo XVI hasta el XVIII, con énfasis en los momentos coyunturales del proceso de colonización de la región de Paria.

In a contrasting way to other regions of America, the conquest of the Eastern Venezuela¿s indigenous people was especially late. This feature was meaningful in the Paria frontier, which was the first region in being contacted by Europeans and one of the last in being finally colonized in the 18th century. Such singularity was dueto the resistance strategies of their inhabitants in a coherent way with their sociopolitical organizations. These populations were integrated by a set of interethnic systems with a great ethnic and cultural complexity that transcended the perceptive scopes of the Europeans. This paper presents a diachronic reconstruction of the colonial frontiers in the Paria region. The temporal frame goes from the 16th to the 18th centuries, with emphasis on the conjunctural moments in the process of colonization of theParia region
