Abstract
Cemetery studies represent a growing field since they are relevant to understanding urban space, especially as they are a product and reflection of the city dynamics. Thus, the spatial analysis of the city of Vitória –the capital of the state of Espírito Santo in southeastern Brazil, one of the oldest cities on the continent– leads to an understanding of how its cemeteries participated in urban transformation. Methodologically, in addition to an extensive literature review, a set of documentary sources regarding the city’s transformations was used, as well as fieldwork involving image records and territorial reconstructions. As a result, it is concluded that while the distribution and spatial change of these cemeteries were, on the one hand, a result of decisions in the general urban plans, on the other hand, their locations and extensions impacted the city’s growth.
