Abstract

In the Discorso del lattare i figliuoli dalle madri (1542) the Italian humanist Sperone Speroni approaches a topic of interest in the Renaissance: whether women should breastfeed their own children or leave them in the care of a nurse. The analysis of this text is confronted with those of other humanists of the 14th century -Francesco de Barbaro and Leon Battista Alberti- and of the 15th century -mainly Erasmus of Rotterdam, but also Juan Luis Vives, Fray Luis de León, Pedro de Luján and Antonio de Guevara- in order to understand how the defense of breastfeeding is one of the key elements of the new concept of family and mother in modern society
