Abstract
The second stage of the evangelization of the New World took place in the viceroyalty of Peru. The demon is described as an evil inherited through the maternal milk. It is a being, or beings, which possesses others through betrayal and other actions, all of which are compiled in the texts, lands, and the souls and bodies of the people of the New World. Because of the nature of this demon, the expansion of faith presents itself as an arduous task, for the faith itself does not “penetrate” the evil in an adequate manner. The expansion of faith was a battle against a usurper of the powers of and the figure of God[himself/ itself?]; this usurper is a devourer of souls. Taking into account the objectives and the hypothesis of the present chapter, we have analyzed two sources of information. In the first place, we have analyzed information obtained in the missions aimed at fighting idolatry, and, in the second place, we have analyzed information found in the judgments Holy Office of the Inquisition in Lima.
