LA DUALIDAD DEMON-DEMONIO COMO CATALIZADOR DE LA CRISTIANIZACIÓN DEL IMPERIO ROMANO

Abstract

El objetivo de este artículo es mostrar cómo la relación entre el concepto grecorro- mano de demon y el concepto judeocristiano de demonio catalizó el complejo proce- so de cristianización del Imperio Romano. Para ello recurriré a diferentes obras de la época, destacando el Contra Celso de Orígenes. Primero se comprobará cómo el de- mon grecorromano, cuya difusa entidad es aceptada por todos en el Imperio, sirvió de sostén conceptual al demonio judeocristiano.Y segundo, demostraré cómo el terror a los demonios y el miedo a un posible castigo eterno, entre otros factores, apartaron poco a poco a una parte no cristiana de la sociedad, acercándola al Cristianismo. -------------------------------------------------------------------------The aim of this paper is to present how the relationship between the concept of Greco-Roman daemon and that of Judeo-Christian daemonion catalyzed the complex process of Christianization of Roman Empire. In order to demonstrate it, I¿ll draw on different contemporary works, with Origen Contra Celsum outstanding. Firstly I¿ll set how Greco-Roman daemon, whose entity was fully accepted in Rome, was a perfect conceptual frame for setting the Judeo-Christian daemonion in the Empire. And secondly, I¿ll show how horror at daemonia and fear of a possible eternal punis- hment, with other causes, step by step removed a part of the non-Christian society to Christianity.
