Los indios o indígenas no desaparecidos y los censos de población sí realizados en el Ecuador decimonono

Abstract

Este artículo tiene como objetivo proponer una metodología de investigación sobre historia demográfica en el Ecuador de la segunda mitad del siglo XIX, partiendo del análisis del estado de la cuestión en la historiografía, con especial atención a los censos de indígenas tras la abolición del Tributo de Indios en 1857, en la que las poblaciones indígenas parecen virtualmente desaparecer de los registros. La laguna de estudios sobre el tema es el disparador que da pie a este trabajo, vacío que encuentra su razón de ser en el desconocimiento general de la historiografía de los archivos y fuentes propicias para el estudio de la Historia Demográfica del Ecuador de finales del siglo XIX. Por ello, se propone un estudio que aúne archivos parroquiales y territoriales con diferentes iniciativas públicas como los censos nacionales ordenados desde la presidencia o las fugaces Oficinas de Estadísticas. Con ello, se podría comenzar a unir los pedazos cuantitativos y cuantificables del rompecabezas demográfico y socioeconómico del Ecuador decimonono.

This article aims to suggest a research methodology on demographic history in Ecuador in the second half of the nineteenth century, starting from the analysis of the state of the issue in historiography, with special attention to indigenous censuses after the abolition of the Tribute of Indians in 1857, in which indigenous populations seem virtually to disappear from the records. The gap of studies on the subject is the trigger that gives rise to this work, a gap that finds its raison d'être in the general ignorance of the historiography of the archives and sources conducive to the study of the Demographic History of Ecuador at the end of the nineteenth century. For this reason, a study is proposed that combines parish and territorial archives with different public initiatives such as the national censuses ordered by the presidency or the fleeting Statistical Offices. With this, the quantitative and quantifiable pieces of the demographic and socioeconomic puzzle of nineteenth-century Ecuador could be brought together.
