Abstract
The question of tourism’s political economy and its relationship to capital accumulation have become increasingly pronounced. From its origins as a technocratic, applied endeavour to a theoretically more rigorous and diverse field of study, this chapter elucidates the various theories and schools thought that have shaped the emergent sub-discipline of tourism political economy. The chapter contends that while the political economy of tourism has been enriched by such diverse scholarly contributions from across the social sciences, at the same time it has struggled to identify and consolidate its unique epistemological and theoretical focus and connect with the wider political economy literature. In the light of this the chapter states the case for a radical political economy of tourism as offering the most effective analytical tools to better engage with and comprehend the growing complexity and scope of tourism capitalism at a time of chronic crisis and polarisation.
