Abstract
The main goal of this paper is to define a new kind of poverty indicator which can measure the multidimensionality of poverty and, at the same time, provide a comprehensive graphic representation, complementing the normally used techniques. A variety of dimensions of poverty can be included in one single indicator; the major properties of the defined indicator are shown. Finally, the indicator is applied to two different examples: one, a Spanish region with low economic productivity and another in Africa. Since the traditional poverty line has no meaning here, a new method is used to compute a poverty hyper plane replacing the role the poverty line performed in classic studies. Use of this indicator is also proposed for a wide range of research fields in the social sciences.
